EVERYTHiNG YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEAT DAMAGE!

EVERYTHiNG YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEAT DAMAGE!

Everyone knows that heat damage happens with the repeated use of blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons. However, most don’t know that you can do some serious damage in one single pass of the flat iron or one single blow dry. THAT’S RiGHT!! Heat damage can happen fast and the only true way to 100% rid yourself of the havoc that was caused is a haircut. So let’s talk all the ways you can prevent heat damage from happening to you.

  1. GET REGULAR TRiMS! Hair that is porous already isn’t strong enough to handle any amount of heat you throw at it. So keeping up with regular trims will help keep your hair in its healthiest state. We recommend every 5-6 weeks even if it’s just a light dusting of those ends.
  2. USE HAiR CARE PRODUCTS THAT HEAL THE HAiR! One of our favorite lines and one we recommend to a majority of our guests is L’anza Healing Hair Care. They have some amazing rinse out and leave in reconstructors that infuse the hair with moisture and protein that is depleted during color services, from environmental stressors,  and from regular styling with heat tools.
  3. GET YOUR THERMAL PROTECTiON GAME ON! Always use a thermal protectant prior to applying any heat to the hair. L’anza stylers all have thermal protection up to 450 degrees. (but please, never have your heat tool up this high) They also have some amazing thermal protectants that actually decrease blow dry time! Who doesn’t want to save time on blow drying?!
  4. TURN THOSE HEAT TOOLS DOWN! Like we said earlier, DO NOT use your heat tools at 450 degrees. There is almost no need for that. It may seem faster but remember it is damaging your hair faster as well! Talk with your stylist about what temperature is right for your hair.
  5. INVEST iN QUALiTY HEAT TOOLS! We recommend using tools that have a temperature dial so you can control the amount of heat on your hair. Our favorite is Bio Ionic. The heat is distributed evenly throughout the tool allowing you to use a lower heat setting.

MY COLOR TOOK FOREVER, SO WHAT GiVES?

MY COLOR TOOK FOREVER, SO WHAT GiVES?

It’s your day off and you’ve scheduled your color appointment along with ten other things after that. We get it. You gotta capitalize on your time available. You go into your appointment, have a consultation with the stylist, and they say it’s gonna take longer than you thought to get the color you want. SHiT! Now you have a choice to make. You really want that Pinterest hair but you gotta pick your dog up from the groomer at 5 and you still have to get groceries. Or the stylist is halfway through the color process, there was no talk about time, and when you ask when you will be done it’s different from what you were expecting. NOW WHAT?!

This happens more often than not and that’s why we wanted to write this blog. We want to give you a clear picture of the process of color, how long it takes, and why. Because nothing’s worse than expecting something to take 2 hours and in reality it takes almost 4.

So how long does it take to get that perfect Pinterest hair color? Well it varies on where you are starting and where you are going. We have taken the liberty of going onto Pinterest and pulling some the images that you see above. Each one of these colors has a story and almost all of them required two or more processes to achieve the desired look.

Say what?!

The truth is that almost all colors you see online, especially those bright bold colors, took two processes or more. Blondes are almost always glazed to desired tone after the lightening process and in our professional opinion it’s best to let the glaze process the full 20 minutes for better longevity.

We here at MOD strive to keep up on our time standards and try our best to be as proficient as possible through team work. We are currently working on making the time expectations known in the consultation so you know when you will be out of the salon and can address any conflicts at that time. If we don’t please ask us. We greatly appreciate the reminder. 😉 So how long does hair color take? That’s a great question.

Let’s break down the time line of a balayage: (top middle pic and bottom left pic)

EXAMPLE: You come in for a balayage, haircut, & wax at 3pm. The length of your hair is just at your bra and is medium to thick in density. You have medium brown hair naturally, you do have some previous color on your hair, and you are wanting a beige blonde tone with no brass.

3pm ~ Consultation

3:15pm ~ Stylist starts color application

4-4:15pm ~ Stylist finishes color application

Color needs to process for 45 – 60 minutes from the time the last section was finished.

4:45-5pm ~ Stylist rinses your color and shampoos your hair

5:10pm ~ Applies glaze (takes 5-15 minutes to apply)

Process glaze for 20 minutes. Stylist does brow wax while glaze processes.

5:30-5:45pm ~ Stylist rinses your glaze and shampoos & conditions hair

5:55pm ~ Starts haircut.

6:20-6:30pm ~ Starts blow dry and style

6:45pm ~ You hair is gorgeous! You are now ready to rebook and pay for your services & home maintenance regimen.

TOTAL TiME: 3 HOURS 45 MiNUTES

We have set time standards for each service. There is always exceptions to the rule as length, thickness, health of hair, and hair history can dramatically affect the time. All time standards, pricing, and description of services can be found on our FACEBOOK page under the Services tab. CLiCK HERE to learn more.

A FEW TiPS FROM US TO YOU:

  • Be honest about your hair history. Knowing what has been done previously helps us know what’s possible and allows us to come up with a plan.
  • Plan to be at the salon for 3-4 hours if you are wanting balayage, micro-foil, have long or thick hair.
  • Ask us questions. We love when you ask questions!
  • If you are needing a color correction plan for 4+ hours and several appointments.

WHY DOES MY BLONDE HAiR GET DiNGY LOOKiNG?

Blonde Hair

WHY DOES MY BLONDE HAiR GET DiNGY LOOKiNG?

The biggest complaint of a BLONDiE is that their blonde hair gets dull and dingy looking. Almost always the first thing they say when they sit in our chair is, “I want to be brighter!” So let’s look into why blondes seem to get dingy looking quicker than our other color guests.

The biggest contributing factor is the porosity of the hair. Hair that has been lightened tends to be more porous and needs a bit more TLC than other hair colors. So what does it mean to have porous hair? Well first let’s start with the definition of porosity. Porosity refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. Environmental stressors, thermal use, and chemical processes affect the porosity level of your hair.

Blonde hair tends to be more porous allowing it to quickly absorb elements such as “Urban Dust” that can be small enough that they get trapped in the inner cortex layer of the hair strand. This build up of pollutants is what causes blondes to get dull & dingy.

To remedy this challenge we recommend using a shampoo that gently removes these pollutants followed by a conditioner that adds moisture, restoring the hair to its optimal lipophilic state. Leave in conditioners & weekly masks are a must as well! When the hairs porosity level is lowered less pollutants can get inside the hair strand allowing the hair to reflect more light and look brighter.

Here at MOD we recommend this regimen for all our BLONDiES:

  1. Shampoo & Condition with L’anza Healing Blonde. If you don’t shampoo daily you may need to shampoo twice prior to conditioning.
  2. Once out of the shower, apply L’anza Blonde Rescue leave in treatment. This helps to rebuild & strengthen the hair.
  3. Mask once a week. We recommend using Moi Moi from L’anza because of its abundance of moisture. With all L’anza masks you have to shampoo, mask for 5-10 minutes, and follow it up with your daily conditioner. The reason is the mask works inside the inner cortex layer to heal the hair and the conditioner works on the outer cuticle layer to seal the hair. Be sure to wring out the water from your hair prior to applying the mask as this allows it to penetrate into the hair strand.
  4. Use thermal protectants! Heat can happen quickly. There are a variety of thermal protectants you can use. Blow dry sprays are our favorites. Spray in after the leave in treatment and follow with your favorite stylers. Two salon favorites are Bounce Up Spray and Smooth Down Spray.

WHAT iF i DON’T LOVE MY HAiR?

WHAT iF i DON’T LOVE MY HAiR?

So the day has arrived. You’ve waited weeks for your color appointment and  you can hardly contain your excitement. You’ve finally decided that today is the day you are going to make the change to that amazing Pinterest pic you’ve been ogling.

You go in, have a consultation with your stylist, and you sit there for 3+ hours expecting to look exactly like the picture. You and your stylist are hitting it off. She’s sharing great information about styling and you are taking mental notes so you can fully enjoy this new look at home.

Then she rinses, glazes, cuts, and styles you out. She hands you the mirror and you are expecting to scream with excitement but wait, it’s not quite as blonde as you wanted. The haircut is great. It’s styled out great. But man it’s not blonde enough! Now what!?

Fear starts to take over and before you can say what you are really thinking you say it’s okay, you pay, set up your next appointment and go home. Once home, you can’t help but think, “Man this really isn’t what I was looking for. I really wanted it to be brighter.”

Does this story sound familiar? Hey we all have been there. It can be hard to tell someone that you don’t quite love what they did. No-one wants to hurt someones feelings. And that’s why we here at MOD wanted to take a minute to tell you that it’s okay to tell us if we missed the mark! That is how we learn and grow!

We want you to feel comfortable enough to let us know. We are always willing to make any adjustments necessary. Never do we intend to get it wrong and almost always when we have had to make an adjustment it is something that is a pretty easy fix.

We work as a team here at MOD. So we will work together to do what works best for you and your schedule to make that adjustment. We ultimately want you to feel beautiful and love your hair!

So here’s a few tips to bring up the subject:

  1. If you know right away in the chair it is not for example blonde enough, let us know. We will make the adjustment immediately if we can. If we can’t do it then we will work with you to get you in at a time that works best for you with one of our stylists.
  2. If you are unsure but want to go home and decide, let us know. We’d be happy to reach out to you in a few days to see if we need to make any adjustments. Sometimes, just like when you go shopping, you need to try it on.
  3. If you get home and realize it isn’t what you were wanting or expecting, please call us. One of our front desk team members will be happy to get you in with one of our stylists to make that adjustment. Or they also would be happy to connect you with a manager.

Our mission is to create hair color you will love! But should we miss the mark, we want to know. That’s why this blog was important to us. We want to take the uncomfortableness out of what can be an uncomfortable situation so you can love your hair.

IS IT CHEATING IF IT’S THE SAME SALON?

Is it cheating if it’s in the same salon?

“If I see another stylist in the salon where my stylist works won’t she be mad at me?” or “I went to Sally while Jane was on maternity leave and I love how she did my hair. I want to continue seeing her but I don’t want to hurt Jane’s feelings.”

These are some things we have heard a lot over the years. The fear of cheating is a real thing and sometimes leads one to stop going to a salon all together to avoid any conflict. So we wanted to take a moment to talk about this issue and give you our thoughts on it.

Our team is here for you, our guests! If it wasn’t for you beautiful people we wouldn’t be living our dream on a daily. At MOD we want you to feel comfortable seeing any stylist you choose. Life is busy and we get that! Sometimes you just need in for a color before your friends wedding and as much as you want to see the stylist you have been seeing for 5 years your schedules just aren’t lining up. That’s okay! We invite you to book with any one of our fabulous stylists if that works best for you and your schedule. NO GRUDGES! NO HARD FEELiNGS! You won’t get the cold shoulder from the stylist you didn’t make an appointment with. In fact when that stylist has a moment she will most likely pop over to say hello and catch up.

Now what if you see another stylist while another one was gone and you really like the haircut and/or color they gave you. You want to continue to see this new stylist because she gave you a fresh new look and you simply want to change things up. We say go for it! Rebook with them. There is no need to explain or defend yourself. We all crave change! We promise none of our stylists will be upset if you are sitting in another teammates chair. You can even bounce back and forth between stylists within MOD. Like we mentioned before, life is busy and sometimes schedules just don’t line up. You may even choose to see one stylist for color and another for haircuts because you like what each of them do. That’s okay too. We all have different strengths.

Of course if you want to stay with one stylist you can. We just want you to know that all of these things are okay with us. We are a team here at MOD so seeing our fellow team mates slaying hair fills up our hearts and makes us happy inside. There is no “my guest” or “your guest” here. We as a team want to take care of OUR guests. We want to take care of YOU. TEAM MOD is here to do what is best for you and your hair.

See you at the salon!

TONE, GLAZE, GLOSS…WHAT?

TONER, GLAZE, GLOSS…WHAT?

These are common words you hear in the salon referring to a service but what do they mean? And are they even necessary? We get asked these questions a lot so we decided to write a blog about what these services are and the why behind them. This blog may seem long and technical but trust us, it is worth the read!

So what is the difference between a toner, a glaze, and a gloss? To be honest nothing. They all are a color service that help even out tonality, intensify tonality, and/or add shine. Here at Mod, we like to use the word GLAZE. It just sounds nicer and most of the time leaves us craving doughnuts. And who doesn’t love a glazed doughnut?! 😝 We typically do a glaze following a lightening service. However, they can be done following any color service. It just depends on the desired end result. Now for the most important question….are they necessary? A lot of times YES! When it comes to achieving beige blondes, ash blondes, and platinum blondes then most definitely YES! Hair almost never lifts to these tones.

Why you ask? Well that is a great question! To answer this question, we want to take you back to when you first learned about the color wheel in grade school. What are the 3 primary colors? YES! Blue, Red, and Yellow. What do they make when mixed together? CORRECT! Brown and brown hair is commonly referred to as brunette. So that means brunette hair is comprised of 1 part blue, 2 parts red, and 3 parts yellow. Blue undertones are found in black hair, red undertones are found in darkest brunette to light brunette, and yellow to palest yellow undertones are found in blondes.

When lightening the hair you lift out these undertones and every undertone in between (think secondary colors) starting with blue and ending with yellow. This means even the lightest shades of blondes will still have some yellow undertones to them. So if you are going for an ashy, beige, or platinum (white) tone you will need to have a glaze done following your lightening service. For you unicorns who have virgin hair and are new to color, you might not need this service unless you’re wanting to intensify tones as virgin hair tends to lift nicely since there is no artificial pigment to lift through.

Hair color trends change and evolve over time but one thing that has never changed is that great hair color takes time.  Today’s color trends are seamless, shiny, and full of dimension. These trends require more time to apply and process and they almost all require a second step. Especially since most everyone has previously colored hair that takes us to a whole new set of rules and steps. At the end of the day, trusting your colorist and having a thorough color consultation with them is key to all successful colors.

BALAYAGE vs CLASSiC FOiL

BALAYAGE vs CLASSiC FOiL

BALAYAGE vs CLASSiC FOiL, which one is better? The truth is both of these techniques are great and it’s not which one is better, it’s about which one is better for YOU!

Let’s start with the CLASSiC FOiL. Not to be confused with a MiCRO-FOiL! That is a topic for another day. 😉

PROS- Classic Foil highlights are an even lightness from scalp to ends. This creates the most brightness especially when the foils are placed around the face. It’s a great way to camouflage gray without having to do an all over color.

CONS- There is a definite line of demarcation when it grows out, making the maintenance more frequent. Usually between 5-8 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows and how dark you are naturally.

A classic foil is great for the person who wants to blend gray, someone who is wanting brightness through the part line, or generally wants to just be lighter. Also, for those who don’t mind visiting the salon every 5-8 weeks.

Now let’s talk BALAYAGE. Balayage is one of the latest trends in coloring. It is defined as a technique for highlighting hair in which the color is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect.

PROS- Balayage creates a very natural look allowing for soft and subtle grow out. This allows you to go 10-12 weeks before needing it done again. If you glaze in between (around 6 weeks) you will most likely get the full 12 weeks out of your balayage. It is also very customizable.

CONS- Highlights do not go all the way to the scalp so you have a more rooty look to your color. It also takes more time than the traditional classic foil to have done as we recommend doing a GLAZE with every balayage.

A balayage is great for those who love that natural rooty look and those wanting to space out their salon visits. So what if  you like that rooty feel but need those bright blondes around the face? WELL….that’s where FOiLAYAGE comes in! Again, a topic for another day.

WE DREAM iN COLOR

COLOR

WE DREAM iN COLOR!

Our favorite thing to do here at Mod is COLOR! Color is a great way to change your look as it can be as subtle and natural or it can be as bright and bold as you want!
⠀⠀
There are several techniques that we love to do and reasons why we do them! Sometimes we combine them for a more customized look! Creating things like FOiLAYAGE! ⠀⠀

1. 𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝙊𝙑𝙀𝙍 𝙎𝙊𝙇𝙞𝘿 𝘾𝙊𝙇𝙊𝙍 𝘼𝙋𝙋𝙇𝙞𝘾𝘼𝙏𝙞𝙊𝙉 – This is great for maximum gray coverage! It also requires the most upkeep as it leaves more of a solid line of demarcation. Damn gray hair! 😝

⠀⠀
2. 𝙁𝙊𝙞𝙇𝙞𝙉𝙂 – FOiLiNG is great because it allows us to place the highlights or lowlights in the places that most flatter your style. Whether it be a full head or partial, this look has a medium maintenance schedule as the line of demarcation is shattered some.

⠀⠀

3. 𝘽𝘼𝙇𝘼𝙔𝘼𝙂𝙀 – Not only is this a growing trend it is also the most natural and customizable color technique! There is so much diffusion that it’s sometimes hard to tell where one colors stops and another color begins. It is by far the most low maintenance color! And it is a salon favorite!

4. 𝙂𝙇𝘼𝙕𝙞𝙉𝙂 – We pair GLAZiNG with our foiling services and balayage services all the time! It’s a great way to add shine and give the hair the perfect tone and blend. This is also a great way to brighten up your balayage in between appointments or simply brighten up your natural hair color!

Relaxer or Keratin: What’s the difference?

Keratin Complex

Relaxer or Keratin: What’s the difference?

Taming ones mane 🦁 can take hours! And let’s face it, who has that kind of time on a daily basis?! NOT ME! So what if I told you there are a couple options that can save you time and stress!  😱 There are two things that help to reduce frizz and smooth the hair that may interest you and those are a relaxer or a keratin. Relaxer or keratin: what’s the difference?

RELAXER:

A relaxer is a chemical service for those guests looking for a more permanent straightener. Relaxers reduce the curl by breaking down the hair strand and chemically altering the texture of your hair therefore leaving a permanent effect on the hair.  They last up to 6-8 weeks before needing to retouch the new growth as this grows with your natural texture. Some over the counter straighteners can not be used on color treated hair while Mizani, which is a salon-exclusive hair care system can be used either two weeks prior to coloring or two weeks after. Time to allow for in salon is approximately 2 hours, depending on thickness of hair.

KERATIN:

A keratin treatment is a non chemical smoothing system that smoothes hair and aids in frizz control. So how does this work? 🤔 If it’s not a chemical then how does it straighten the hair? The science behind Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatments is pretty interesting! Keratin-associated proteins are what the hair is mainly comprised of and these proteins act as an external protector in the cuticle and an internal structural protein in the cortex. So when the hair is damaged physically, chemically, or from environmental factors the keratin is depleted thus leaving the cortex exposed making it susceptible to more damage and leaving porous spots in the hair, much like pot holes in the road!

So by replenishing the keratin in your hair with a Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment you help to correct the porosity and smooth out your hair’s surface.  Restoring strength and elasticity will give your hair a more youthful, healthy appearance. This allows the  effects to gradually wear off as it does not permanently alter the hair texture. They can last up to 5 months and can be used immediately after a color service.

Now that you know the difference between the two, the next step is to set up a consultation with your stylist to see which is right for your lifestyle and your budget!

Here at Mod Hair Color Salon & Beauty Store our go to girl for relaxers and keratin treatments is Katrina Williams. She is certified by Keratin Complex and passionate about about smoothing!
