TONE, GLAZE, GLOSS…WHAT?

TONER, GLAZE, GLOSS…WHAT?

These are common words you hear in the salon referring to a service but what do they mean? And are they even necessary? We get asked these questions a lot so we decided to write a blog about what these services are and the why behind them. This blog may seem long and technical but trust us, it is worth the read!

So what is the difference between a toner, a glaze, and a gloss? To be honest nothing. They all are a color service that help even out tonality, intensify tonality, and/or add shine. Here at Mod, we like to use the word GLAZE. It just sounds nicer and most of the time leaves us craving doughnuts. And who doesn’t love a glazed doughnut?! ๐Ÿ˜ย We typically do a glaze following a lightening service. However, they can be done following any color service. It just depends on the desired end result. Now for the most important question….are they necessary? A lot of times YES! When it comes to achieving beige blondes, ash blondes, and platinum blondes then most definitely YES! Hair almost never lifts to these tones.

Why you ask? Well that is a great question!ย To answer this question, we want to take you back to when you first learned about the color wheel in grade school.ย What are the 3 primary colors? YES! Blue, Red, and Yellow. What do they make when mixed together? CORRECT! Brown and brown hair is commonly referred to as brunette. So that means brunette hair is comprised of 1 part blue, 2 parts red, and 3 parts yellow. Blue undertones are found in black hair, red undertones are found in darkest brunette to light brunette, and yellow to palest yellow undertones are found in blondes.

When lightening the hair you lift out these undertones and every undertone in between (think secondary colors) starting with blue and ending with yellow. This means even the lightest shades of blondes will still have some yellow undertones to them. So if you are going for an ashy, beige, or platinum (white) tone you will need to have a glaze done following your lightening service. For you unicorns who have virgin hair and are new to color, you might not need this service unless you’re wanting to intensify tones as virgin hair tends to lift nicely since there is no artificial pigment to lift through.

Hair color trends change and evolve over time but one thing that has never changed is that great hair color takes time. ย Today’s color trends are seamless, shiny, and full of dimension. These trends require more time to apply and process and they almost all require a second step. Especially since most everyone has previously colored hair that takes us to a whole new set of rules and steps.ย At the end of the day, trusting your colorist and having a thorough color consultation with them is key to all successful colors.

BALAYAGE vs CLASSiC FOiL

BALAYAGE vs CLASSiC FOiL

BALAYAGE vs CLASSiC FOiL, which one is better? The truth is both of these techniques are great and it’s not which one is better, it’s about which one is better for YOU!

Let’s start with the CLASSiC FOiL.ย Not to be confused with a MiCRO-FOiL! That is a topic for another day.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰โ€‹

PROS- Classic Foil highlights are an even lightness from scalp to ends. This creates the most brightness especially when the foils are placed around the face. It’s a great way to camouflage gray without having to do an all over color.

CONS-ย There is a definite line of demarcation when it grows out, making the maintenance more frequent. Usually between 5-8 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows and how dark you are naturally.

A classic foil is great for the person who wants to blend gray, someone who is wanting brightness through the part line, or generally wants to just be lighter. Also, for those who don’t mind visiting the salon every 5-8 weeks.

Now let’s talk BALAYAGE. Balayage is one of the latest trends in coloring. It is defined as a technique for highlighting hairย in which the color is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect.

PROS-ย Balayage creates a very natural look allowing for soft and subtle grow out. This allows you to go 10-12 weeks before needing it done again. If you glaze in between (around 6 weeks) you will most likely get the full 12 weeks out of your balayage. It is also very customizable.

CONS-ย Highlights do not go all the way to the scalp so you have a more rooty look to your color. It also takes more time than the traditional classic foil to have done as we recommend doing a GLAZEย with every balayage.

A balayage is great for those who love that natural rooty look and those wanting to space out their salon visits.ย So what if ย you like that rooty feel but need those bright blondes around the face? WELL….that’s where FOiLAYAGE comes in! Again, a topic for another day.

WE DREAM iN COLOR

COLOR

WE DREAM iN COLOR!

Our favorite thing to do here at Mod is COLOR! Color is a great way to change your look as it can be as subtle and natural or it can be as bright and bold as you want!
โ €โ €
There are several techniques that we love to do and reasons why we do them! Sometimes we combine them for a more customized look! Creating things like FOiLAYAGE! โ €โ €

โ €
1. ๐˜ผ๐™‡๐™‡ ๐™Š๐™‘๐™€๐™ ๐™Ž๐™Š๐™‡๐™ž๐˜ฟ ๐˜พ๐™Š๐™‡๐™Š๐™ ๐˜ผ๐™‹๐™‹๐™‡๐™ž๐˜พ๐˜ผ๐™๐™ž๐™Š๐™‰ – This is great for maximum gray coverage! It also requires the most upkeep as it leaves more of a solid line of demarcation. Damn gray hair! ๐Ÿ˜

โ €โ €
2. ๐™๐™Š๐™ž๐™‡๐™ž๐™‰๐™‚ – FOiLiNG is great because it allows us to place the highlights or lowlights in the places that most flatter your style. Whether it be a full head or partial, this look has a medium maintenance schedule as the line of demarcation is shattered some.

โ €โ €

3. ๐˜ฝ๐˜ผ๐™‡๐˜ผ๐™”๐˜ผ๐™‚๐™€ – Not only is this a growing trend it is also the most natural and customizable color technique! There is so much diffusion that itโ€™s sometimes hard to tell where one colors stops and another color begins. It is by far the most low maintenance color! And it is a salon favorite!

4. ๐™‚๐™‡๐˜ผ๐™•๐™ž๐™‰๐™‚ – We pair GLAZiNG with our foiling services and balayage services all the time! Itโ€™s a great way to add shine and give the hair the perfect tone and blend. This is also a great way to brighten up your balayage in between appointments or simply brighten up your natural hair color!

Relaxer or Keratin: What’s the difference?

Keratin Complex

ย

Relaxer or Keratin: What’s the difference?

Taming ones maneย ๐Ÿฆโ€‹ย can take hours! And let’s face it, who has that kind of time on a daily basis?! NOT ME! So what if I told you there are a couple options that can save you time and stress! ย ๐Ÿ˜ฑโ€‹ There are two things that help to reduce frizz and smooth the hair that may interest you and those are a relaxer or a keratin. Relaxer or keratin: what’s the difference?

RELAXER:

A relaxer is a chemical service for those guests looking for a more permanent straightener. Relaxers reduce the curl by breaking down the hair strand and chemically altering the texture of your hair therefore leaving a permanent effect on the hair.ย ย They last up to 6-8 weeks before needing to retouch the new growth as this grows with your natural texture. Some over the counter straighteners can not be used on color treated hair while Mizani, which is a salon-exclusive hair care system can be used either two weeks prior to coloring or two weeks after. Time to allow for in salon is approximately 2 hours, depending on thickness of hair.

KERATIN:

A keratin treatment is a non chemical smoothing system that smoothes hair and aids in frizz control. So how does this work?ย ๐Ÿค”โ€‹ย If it’s not a chemical then how does it straighten the hair? The science behind Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatments is pretty interesting! Keratin-associated proteins are what the hair is mainly comprised of and these proteins act as an external protector in the cuticle and an internal structural protein in the cortex. So when the hair is damaged physically, chemically, or from environmental factors the keratin is depleted thus leaving the cortex exposed making it susceptible to more damage and leaving porous spots in the hair, much like pot holes in the road!

So by replenishing the keratin in your hair with a Keratin Complex Smoothing Treatment you help to correct the porosity and smooth out your hair’s surface. ย Restoring strength and elasticity will give your hair a more youthful, healthy appearance. This allows the ย effects to gradually wear off as it does not permanently alter the hair texture. They can last up to 5 months and can be used immediately after a color service.

Now that you know the difference between the two, the next step is to set up a consultation with your stylist to see which is right for your lifestyle and your budget!

Here at Mod Hair Color Salon & Beauty Store our go to girl for relaxers and keratin treatments is Katrina Williams. She is certified by Keratin Complex and passionate about about smoothing!

WHAT IS DOGGY ‘POO?

WHAT IS DOGGY ‘POO?

What is Doggy ‘Poo you ask? It is a shampoo for your furry friends! However, this Doggy ‘Poo is so much more than a shampoo for your dog, it is a shampoo with a purpose.

I remember the first time hearing about the cause behind Doggy’Poo. I was sitting in a Unite Paramount Business class in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For those of you not familiar with the Unite brand, check out their website at Unitehair.com to meet the CEO and Founder, Andrew Dale. Andrew Dale is a very passionate man who believes in making salon owners and stylists life easier.ย He also is a lover of dogs!ย ๐Ÿถโ€‹ย โค๏ธโ€‹

Besides making great hair care products, he is also a stylist and the owner of a salon in California. Did you know that a portion of all profits from the Unite Salon in San Diego go directly into supporting San Diego charities to help those without a voice? Pretty cool, huh?ย

โ€‹So what is the purpose behind Doggy Poo you ask? To give back! ALLย of the proceeds from the sale of Doggy ‘Poo are going to two organizations that are near and dear to Dale and his Unite Team’s hearts: The San Diego Humane Society and Shelter to Soldier. Isn’t that amazing!?!

Here at Mod, we certainly think so! So with all that being said, come check out Doggy’Poo here at the salon. It has oatmeal to soothe your furry friend’s skin and Argan Oil to promote a healthy and shiny coat. It is “Human tested, doggy approved.”

Stop by Mod’s beauty storeย and treat your pup to a spa day!ย ๐Ÿถโ€‹

Training In Progress

โ€ผ๏ธโ€‹TRAINING IN PROGRESSโ€ผ๏ธโ€‹

Quiet!! Training: In Progress! Here at Mod Hair Color Salon & Beauty Store we believe education and training is vital to our success behind the chair. Not only is it what continues to make us a better stylist year after year, it is what can make or break a new stylist. That is why we are creating a training program here at the salon for stylists coming out of school.ย ?โ€‹

The goal behind the training program is to allow for an easier transition from school to salon. Think of it as a residency for Cosmetologists. We are expecting the finished training program to be anywhere from 6-12 months.

I have been working with two very talented young stylists to create this training program for the past 4 months. Together we are discovering what works and what doesn’t all the while training them to become the best! The future of our stylists is very important to Jody and I.

ย I asked Mataya Clark what she likedย best about the training program and she told me this, “In school you learn the basics of every cut, style, and color. This program allows you to learn more advanced techniques and fully prepare you for the unexpected. Being in a fast pace salon environment really opens your eyes to all the possibilities of becoming a successful stylist.”ย

She is right. You just can’t learn it all in school. Salon owners and senior stylists have an ย obligation to guide their team. We need to take part in creating greatness in our industry. It is our responsibility to teach the next generation. In doing so we can truly learn a great deal.

Sara Fisher was the first to start in this program. She says she loves being a part of the development of the program.ย “I am happy to be apart of this development because I’ll really be able to see how much it changes and grows for stylists who are a part of it in the future. To be able to eventually coach others will be extremely rewarding.”

We look forward to seeing how far they have grown once they have completed the training program. They have already gained so much. Sara and Mataya are currently behind the chair on Saturdays doing blow outs, formal styling, waxing, makeup and hair treatments. They currently are in the cutting portion of the training program and have a goal of cutting hair behind the chair in October. This would allow them to be behind the chair Wednesday nights and Saturdays.

To schedule a blow out with Sara and Mataya call 319-553-1080 or book online at www.modsalonbeautystore.com.

Removing Makeup

makeup towel, removing makeup

Removing ย Makeup

Removing makeup at the end of the day is an important step to clear and healthy skin. It doesn’t take that long. But if you are like me, sometimes you skip this step and jump straight into bed. Terrible right?! ย ?โ€‹

Honestly up until my late 30’s I never really thought twice about my skin. It wasn’t until then that I thought to myself, “Girl you better start taking better care of yourself! You aren’t as young as you once were.” Aging can be tough, especially when all you see in magazines are 20 year olds looking so flawless and you’re over here putting 5 different creams on your face to ward off the wrinkles.ย ?โ€‹

The one thing I have to remind myself is that beautyย ?โ€‹ย is within all of us and it comes in all forms. HELL, wrinkles can be beautiful if they are worn by a beautiful soul. So if I can pass along one piece of advice, no matter how young or old you are, take care of the skin you are in. Drink lots of water and always remove your makeup!!

Removing makeup doesn’t have to be a 30 minute routine!ย ?โ€‹ SAY WHAT?! The Makeup Towel is the one thing that made removing makeup easier for me. While at The Makeup Show in Chicago, my friend Jody introduced me to this amazing towel. I thought to myself “I can do this!” What I love about the makeup towel is that it easily removes eye makeup without eye makeup remover. I don’t know about you but my eyes are super sensitive so a towel and warm water is perfect for me!ย ?โ€‹ I use the makeup towel and warm water to remove my makeup and then I spray the Skindinavia Post Makeup Spray. Although if I really feel like treating myself I apply a facial mask after using The Makeup Towel, relax and drink a Heineken while binge watching Game of Thrones.ย ?โ€‹
