Making a drastic color change

Changing your hair color drastically is a lot like getting into a swimming pool. It can happen in two different approaches; dipping your toes and inching your way in or just diving right in. You decide what you feel most comfortable doing, which is similar when playing around with the idea of changing your hair color.

For those who are considering going from light to dark hair, you may want to try getting lowlights to inch your way to the dark side, which is great for dimension and introducing dark colors. Or you can dive right in and be willing to sit through a couple processes at the salon for a few hours but leave with the rich, dark color you desired.

Now, if you have really dark hair and want to be a blonde bombshell, it’s going to take time and trust in your stylist. You can take baby steps or the big jump as well. To start, you can get highlights with each hair appointment to gradually lighten the appearance of your hair color and add awesome dimension too, or just go for the big change. The process can be more time consuming, because it most likely will be more than 2 processes in one sitting.

Drastic changes can also be very shocking going from one end to the other, so make sure it’s what you really want. Our number one priority as stylists is to keep hair healthy and in great condition while still giving you what you want. With this being said, PLEASE, PLEASE trust our professional opinion and recommendation on what route to take that will be best for you and your hair.

Both of these clients wanted to blonde right away, so 5 hours and two full foil processes later, it’s what they received without compromising the condition of their hair.

UNITE – Featured

One of our most popular and loved hair product lines is featured over and over again!

Founder and CEO, Andrew Dale, began his hairdressing career as an apprentice with Vidal Sassoon at 16 years old. He became a stylist by 18 and doing session work with Vidal by the time he was 20. He was soon later relocated to New York and Beverly Hills, teaching with the Sassoon Artistic Team, on platform and at the Santa Monica Academy. He continued on to open 5 of his own salons in Los Angeles and San Diego. He then created UNITE Haircare in 2003 and has held true to his UNITE slogan – “Uniting hairdressers together to make the industry a better place.” What we love most about UNITE is that it is a product line that’s been created by a hairdresser for hairdressers.

choosing the right BaNgS for your face shape

It’s crazy how a few snips in that fringe area can give you a whole new look, even on an existing haircut! But, as effortless they look, bangs require a little more effort when styling it so allow yourself five more minutes to tweak those around when you’re getting ready.

Here are our recommended choices of bang styles to go with each face shape.

Remember, the ideal face shape is OVAL, so our goal is to make every face shape look oval because of the way it is cut and styled.

Good news for the oval faces out there….you can pretty much pull off any style of bangs! Play around with different bang styles as long as they compliment your existing haircut (or new!) well.

Heart face shapes are complimented best by either long layers that frame the face or straight across but notched bangs. Heart shape is prominent in the forehead, so the goal is to cover most or some of that up.

Square face shapes should avoid center parted bangs and super-blunt bangs. The most flattering bangs on short hair will be a side swept bang and on long hair, a slightly uneven forehead fringe. Super sharp lines will emphasize the sharp angles in the jaw line and look box-like.

To off-set the roundness of the face, we choose a wispy, side swept bang. You typically don’t want to have a super short bang because it will emphasize the roundness by making your face appear shorter.
Bangs will help giving the illusion of shortening the face, so you definitely will want them! When choosing a bang style, be mindful of your hair length. If your hair is short, go with a more side swept bang. With long hair, go with a straight across bang that will cover most of the forehead to help shorten the length of the face.

A “NO, i’m not wearing my hair like that, that looks silly.” kind of hair style….at first. But now, we are guilty and wearing it ourselves (Oops!) “The Hun” – its so called name but it technically is a half up, half down bun.

But we love it as a simple, cute, effortless look. Jazz it up of course with a statement outfit or dramatic makeup so you don’t look like you just rolled out of bed like this. A video to show you how we created this look will be uploaded soon! Grab an elastic band, a few bobby pins and a medium hairspray.

Some of us at Mod rockin’ it.

This trend has been around though…..so as they always say, “What goes around, comes back around.” Right, Gene?

You’re enjoying summer, but it’s taking a toll on your hair…….. :(

We know how amazing spending time outside in the sun and around the pool is during the summer months. We’re all persistent to protect our skin from  UVA and UVB rays, but often forget to give the same attention to our hair. No, hair can’t get sunburn, but the sun can cause discoloration, dry & brittle ends, split-ends, frizziness,  not a hold a style or curl very well due to the dryness.

The sun rays and hair lightener act in similar ways, a chemical reaction happens. The rays react the with melanin in hair and irreversibly removes the color, which in result, starts to break down the keratin protein (70% of our hair strands are made up of keratin protein!) and rough up the cuticle (outer) layer.

Chlorine is a disinfectant. Disinfectants are used to remove and break down dirt, oil, and bacteria. Our scalps naturally produce oil to protect our hair from damage and daily wear. Stripping the oil from your hair in a pool on a regular basis can cause over drying, increased porosity, and in some cases pretty significant damage if you don’t take steps to prevent and treat your hair for chlorine exposure. The Mod must after being in chlorine is to rinse well with warm water, shampoo with a clarifying shampoo and heavily condition.

We recommend coming into Mod for the Surface Summer Hair Repair reconstructing treatment. It contains the a clarifying, but gentle, shampoo with a killer scalp massage, Trinity One Shot, a tube infused with high amounts of silk protein, followed by the Bassu Masque for super hydration and finishing it off with Bassu Oil for great shine and heat protectant. After shampooing and applying all these products, they are blown dry into the hair for maximum repair. You won’t believe the instant softness, hydration and life you get from this simple regimen. And BEST news yet, you can take all of these products home and never have dull, dry hair again!

How to communicate with your stylist?

Oftentimes, miscommunication between stylist & client happens. It’s like you walk in & you suddenly cannot speak or understand the terminology coming out of your hairdressers mouth……Blunt what? Point-cut who? Dust my ends where?

Hairdressers tend to talk to you like you’ve been through the Miss Beauty Academy and you’re like “Hello lady, I barely know how to get my hair straight that I’ve worn for 30+ years, I don’t know how you should cut my hair.” Unfortunately, it leads to you walking out with something you did not want.

Here, we give you 4 tips on how to communicate effectively with your stylist.

1. BE HONEST : Don’t say you use the fancy shampoo/conditioners and professional color when you’ve actually visited the guilty isle at the drug stores. WE WANT TO KNOW YOUR HAIR HISTORY! The more we know, the better, so that the turnout can be the best that it can be. Chemical services are the most important to share because chemical reactions will happen and need to be avoided, so don’t feel embarrassed to tell us and we’ll be grateful so that we can give you the best service possible!

2. BRING PICTURES : Bring in the classic Jennifer Anniston, confident Beyonce or sexy Kim Kardashian and we’ll tell you what we think would suit you best and what’s achievable. Pictures can be a saving grace because “honey” or “cherry coke” to you may be not be “honey” or “cherry coke” to us. Bring in pictures that are styled the same way you can see yourself styling it on a daily basis. Each picture can give us another clue of what you generally like and don’t like, so bring more than one!

3. BE REALISTIC : The most common thing we get in the first 5 minutes of an appointment is women/men bringing in pictures, (which is great!), we want you to just like stated above but they are of someone with thick, dark, curly hair and their hair is blonde, straight, and fine. Try to bring in photos that are similar to your hair, not necessarily in color, but with density and texture. With most haircuts, you can receive what you’ve envisioned as long as it is realistic (like wanting us to magically grow your hair 10 inches…sorry, we wish!). With color though, it’s achievable up to a certain extent. If you are asking for the trending icy blonde and you have dark brown hair hair, it will most likely take 3 visits to get there, otherwise color is very versatile that we can work ways to give you the best color you wanted. As long as it is, again, realistic.

4. KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T WANT : Okay, so maybe you have not a clue what you want or you thought “Forget the pictures! I’ll have her do whatever she wants!” We love the challenge, but if you know what you don’t want or hate, that can help us tremendously and will narrow down the options for us to suggest to you so that the many choices to choose from don’t become overwhelming.

Don’t blow it – (h)AIR styling

Take advantage of the summer heat and give your blow-dryer a break, without compromising your style of course. We have put some clients on a 30-day challenge of styling their hair without blow-drying it, many have seen results. We get it, blow-drying is convenient and fast, but when the hair goes from a very wet state to a dry state, anywhere from 2-5 times a week, it takes a toll on the hair as all of its moisture has been evaporated from high heat in a matter of ten minutes and can tend to get very dry. So, we’ve told you to not use your blow-dryer….now what?

Always use one of our professional shampoo’s and conditioners that will suit what your hair needs at this time (moisture, strength, volume). Depending on how often you shampoo, adding ten minutes for a deep conditioning mask once or twice a week after you shampoo and before you condition will tremendously further your results. You want to towel-dry your hair well to get all of the abundant amount of water off the hair.

For those who have any natural curl or wave:

AG Beach Bomb is great for those who already have some wave or curl to their hair. The bio-fermented tomato fruit extract is what will encourage more curl by shrinking the hair cuticle as well as adding moisture, shine and frizz fighting agents. It is a product that you won’t hardly feel in the hair, so it will give you the natural, tousled look. To use: using your palms, scrunch a small amount into towel blotted hair and keep adding more if needed, depending on hair density, and keep scrunching upward toward the scalp until it feels evenly distributed. Let it be to dry, and get on with your day with an effortless (because it is!) look!

We have many different products that will work with those who have more or less curl, so stop on in to get your Beach Bomb or another styling aid. The beach sprays are awesome for a more dramatic beach look!

Now, for the straight haired ladies:

U Argan Oil….it just sounds wonderful, because it is! It’s great for straight textured hair because a little, tiny bit will go a LONG way. Its a miracle oil that adds immense shine and moisture, seals the cuticle (so bye-bye fly-aways) and humidity-resistant without losing all your body, even for those who have fine hair. Use 1-3 drops, depending on thickness of hair, and work from mid-shaft to ends and feathering up towards the scalp. Apply this in towel dried hair, brush through to promote even distribution and off you go! Feel free to add more moderately after hair has dried to enhance the results.

A Mod Salon frequently asked Question

How do I get rid of my split ends?

There is only one way to get rid of split ends….and it’s just like a dysfunctional relationship – CUT ‘EM OFF! Split ends are un-repairable once the hair has split, it will continue to do so up the hair strand until it has broken off or been cut off. Regardless of what any product out there says, it won’t make them go away but there are products to help MEND split ends temporarily so they look neat & smoothed down and products to help PREVENT split ends from happening.

*Click image to go to aghair.com to learn more about the product!

A great smoothing product for those who are not ready to completely cut off all of your split ends to conserve some length is the AG Smoothing Balm. It will tame the frizz & flyaways that come with split ends. It contains Marula, Argan & Mongongo oils that are packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants for high-shine and smoothing properties.

Another great product to add is the AG Repair Serum. Hair is made up of 90% keratin so adding these leave-in product to your hair after its been shampooed will help prevent those split ends from happening. Its main purpose to heal the hair while MENDING those split ends and leaving them soft & glossy.

Love your “Lob”

A lot of gals have been loving “The Lob” lately. With our hot, sticky, Iowa summers, women are wanting to keep their length but dread fighting it with the heat. The Lob, or long bob, is the “it” haircut right now and is the perfect balance between long and short hair length. If commitment to short hair scares you, The Lob is a great compromise. Client’s love this cut because it allows you to free yourself from unnecessary length but just enough change without taking the plunge completely. It’s the best of both worlds.

Fine to thick, wavy to straight, The Lob works with many different hair types and textures. By choosing the correct length, you can alter it to any face shape too. Non-aggressive layering can be added for extra movement and style, as well as virtually any type of fringe or bang. The Lob allows you to pull your hair back into a ponytail and can also be swept up into an updo for a more formal style.

Popular “lob” cuts have been keeping the hair length slightly below the shoulder. By leaving some of the length, you allow yourself to have many different styling options. Whether you prefer to tousle dry, create waves or define with an iron, your styling routine doesn’t have to change drastically. Less fuss is always a plus!
