WHY DOES MY BLONDE HAiR GET DiNGY LOOKiNG?

WHY DOES MY BLONDE HAiR GET DiNGY LOOKiNG?

The biggest complaint of a BLONDiE is that their blonde hair gets dull and dingy looking. Almost always the first thing they say when they sit in our chair is, “I want to be brighter!” So let’s look into why blondes seem to get dingy looking quicker than our other color guests.

The biggest contributing factor is the porosity of the hair. Hair that has been lightened tends to be more porous and needs a bit more TLC than other hair colors. So what does it mean to have porous hair? Well first let’s start with the definition of porosity. Porosity refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture. Environmental stressors, thermal use, and chemical processes affect the porosity level of your hair.

Blonde hair tends to be more porous allowing it to quickly absorb elements such as “Urban Dust” that can be small enough that they get trapped in the inner cortex layer of the hair strand. This build up of pollutants is what causes blondes to get dull & dingy.

To remedy this challenge we recommend using a shampoo that gently removes these pollutants followed by a conditioner that adds moisture, restoring the hair to its optimal lipophilic state. Leave in conditioners & weekly masks are a must as well! When the hairs porosity level is lowered less pollutants can get inside the hair strand allowing the hair to reflect more light and look brighter.

Here at MOD we recommend this regimen for all our BLONDiES:

  1. Shampoo & Condition with L’anza Healing Blonde. If you don’t shampoo daily you may need to shampoo twice prior to conditioning.
  2. Once out of the shower, apply L’anza Blonde Rescue leave in treatment. This helps to rebuild & strengthen the hair.
  3. Mask once a week. We recommend using Moi Moi from L’anza because of its abundance of moisture. With all L’anza masks you have to shampoo, mask for 5-10 minutes, and follow it up with your daily conditioner. The reason is the mask works inside the inner cortex layer to heal the hair and the conditioner works on the outer cuticle layer to seal the hair. Be sure to wring out the water from your hair prior to applying the mask as this allows it to penetrate into the hair strand.
  4. Use thermal protectants! Heat can happen quickly. There are a variety of thermal protectants you can use. Blow dry sprays are our favorites. Spray in after the leave in treatment and follow with your favorite stylers. Two salon favorites are Bounce Up Spray and Smooth Down Spray.

WE DREAM iN COLOR

COLOR

WE DREAM iN COLOR!

Our favorite thing to do here at Mod is COLOR! Color is a great way to change your look as it can be as subtle and natural or it can be as bright and bold as you want!
⠀⠀
There are several techniques that we love to do and reasons why we do them! Sometimes we combine them for a more customized look! Creating things like FOiLAYAGE! ⠀⠀

1. 𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝙊𝙑𝙀𝙍 𝙎𝙊𝙇𝙞𝘿 𝘾𝙊𝙇𝙊𝙍 𝘼𝙋𝙋𝙇𝙞𝘾𝘼𝙏𝙞𝙊𝙉 – This is great for maximum gray coverage! It also requires the most upkeep as it leaves more of a solid line of demarcation. Damn gray hair! 😝

⠀⠀
2. 𝙁𝙊𝙞𝙇𝙞𝙉𝙂 – FOiLiNG is great because it allows us to place the highlights or lowlights in the places that most flatter your style. Whether it be a full head or partial, this look has a medium maintenance schedule as the line of demarcation is shattered some.

⠀⠀

3. 𝘽𝘼𝙇𝘼𝙔𝘼𝙂𝙀 – Not only is this a growing trend it is also the most natural and customizable color technique! There is so much diffusion that it’s sometimes hard to tell where one colors stops and another color begins. It is by far the most low maintenance color! And it is a salon favorite!

4. 𝙂𝙇𝘼𝙕𝙞𝙉𝙂 – We pair GLAZiNG with our foiling services and balayage services all the time! It’s a great way to add shine and give the hair the perfect tone and blend. This is also a great way to brighten up your balayage in between appointments or simply brighten up your natural hair color!

10 Questions With Katrina Williams

1. When did you graduate from cosmetology college and from which one did you graduate? I graduated cosmetology school in 1993 from La’ James.

2. Why did you go into this industry? I went into this industry because I’ve always known I wanted to help people. I just didn’t know to what capacity and I’ve always been interested in the fashion industry so I visited La’ James and signed up for classes immediately after graduating high school.

3. What is your favorite part of being a cosmetologist? I love meeting new people and I love making people look and feel great!

4. Why did you choose Mod? I chose Mod because of it’s leadership and for the team that works together. The team members at Mod are professional women that care about their guests and each other!

5. What’s your favorite thing about being a team member at Mod? My favorite thing about being a team member at Mod is that every stylist here is always willing to help you when you’re unsure or if there’s an area you aren’t so strong in, they help you become stronger and confident.
6. What’s your most embarrassing salon moment? In my early years of being a stylist I was really nervous about “fitting in.” I had an older guest that I was giving a shampoo to and accidentally got water down her back! I was so embarrassed! It’s years later and we still laugh about it.
7. What’s your favorite styling tip you like to teach your guests? My favorite styling tip is to encourage my guests to use a Wet Brush to detangle their hair after shampooing. I also like to teach my guests how to get a really pretty beach-y wave by using a wand to curl their hair.

8. What do you like to do most when you are not in in the salon? When I’m not in the salon I like to spend time either with my family or relaxing on my porch trying to gain inspiration from my surroundings.

I also like Bassu Hydrating Masque because it’s super hydrating, weightless, and it’s user friendly. I get an amazing shine and my hair is left in great condition.

10. What are your top two services you enjoy doing most and why? My top two services are hair color and keratin treatments. Hair color because I’m able to create a customized color for my clients that fits their individual personality.
Keratin Treatments because it allows clients who have trouble with frizzy unruly hair. The Keratin Treatment tames the frizz and allows me to offer a non chemical smoothing solution to guests who want smooth hair without compromising the integrity of their hair.

WHAT IS DOGGY ‘POO?

WHAT IS DOGGY ‘POO?

What is Doggy ‘Poo you ask? It is a shampoo for your furry friends! However, this Doggy ‘Poo is so much more than a shampoo for your dog, it is a shampoo with a purpose.

I remember the first time hearing about the cause behind Doggy’Poo. I was sitting in a Unite Paramount Business class in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For those of you not familiar with the Unite brand, check out their website at Unitehair.com to meet the CEO and Founder, Andrew Dale. Andrew Dale is a very passionate man who believes in making salon owners and stylists life easier. He also is a lover of dogs! 🐶 ❤️

Besides making great hair care products, he is also a stylist and the owner of a salon in California. Did you know that a portion of all profits from the Unite Salon in San Diego go directly into supporting San Diego charities to help those without a voice? Pretty cool, huh?

So what is the purpose behind Doggy Poo you ask? To give back! ALL of the proceeds from the sale of Doggy ‘Poo are going to two organizations that are near and dear to Dale and his Unite Team’s hearts: The San Diego Humane Society and Shelter to Soldier. Isn’t that amazing!?!

Here at Mod, we certainly think so! So with all that being said, come check out Doggy’Poo here at the salon. It has oatmeal to soothe your furry friend’s skin and Argan Oil to promote a healthy and shiny coat. It is “Human tested, doggy approved.”

Stop by Mod’s beauty store and treat your pup to a spa day! 🐶

Training In Progress

‼️TRAINING IN PROGRESS‼️

Quiet!! Training: In Progress! Here at Mod Hair Color Salon & Beauty Store we believe education and training is vital to our success behind the chair. Not only is it what continues to make us a better stylist year after year, it is what can make or break a new stylist. That is why we are creating a training program here at the salon for stylists coming out of school. ?

The goal behind the training program is to allow for an easier transition from school to salon. Think of it as a residency for Cosmetologists. We are expecting the finished training program to be anywhere from 6-12 months.

I have been working with two very talented young stylists to create this training program for the past 4 months. Together we are discovering what works and what doesn’t all the while training them to become the best! The future of our stylists is very important to Jody and I.

I asked Mataya Clark what she liked best about the training program and she told me this, “In school you learn the basics of every cut, style, and color. This program allows you to learn more advanced techniques and fully prepare you for the unexpected. Being in a fast pace salon environment really opens your eyes to all the possibilities of becoming a successful stylist.”

She is right. You just can’t learn it all in school. Salon owners and senior stylists have an  obligation to guide their team. We need to take part in creating greatness in our industry. It is our responsibility to teach the next generation. In doing so we can truly learn a great deal.

Sara Fisher was the first to start in this program. She says she loves being a part of the development of the program. “I am happy to be apart of this development because I’ll really be able to see how much it changes and grows for stylists who are a part of it in the future. To be able to eventually coach others will be extremely rewarding.”

We look forward to seeing how far they have grown once they have completed the training program. They have already gained so much. Sara and Mataya are currently behind the chair on Saturdays doing blow outs, formal styling, waxing, makeup and hair treatments. They currently are in the cutting portion of the training program and have a goal of cutting hair behind the chair in October. This would allow them to be behind the chair Wednesday nights and Saturdays.

To schedule a blow out with Sara and Mataya call 319-553-1080 or book online at www.modsalonbeautystore.com.

Does your makeup melt away? Find out why!

Does your makeup melt away?

Find out why!

Does your makeup melt away half way through the day? Ever wonder why? Read on to find out.

Makeup can tend to melt away due to heat from our skin. Our normal skin temperature is 90 degrees. ? That is hot!! This natural heat from our skin can cause moisture to evaporate causing dry, cracked makeup, makeup color loss, excessive oil to counter act the dryness, and leave our face with an oily sheen.

What is the solution? Cool down your skin! Skindinavia has solved the problem of vanishing makeup with their temperature control technology.

Why Skindinavia? Their breathable, lightweight formula won’t clog your pores or cause breakouts. It is hypoallergenic, oil free, paraben free, and non comedogenic.

How does it work? Skindinavia’s patented technology forms a lightweight, breathable web that works with your makeup and slowly releases over 16 hours. This helps to retain moisture longer while also drawing heat away from the skin.

What you will LoVE  ❤️ about this solution is:

  • Keeps makeup fresh throughout the day
  • Preserves full coverage
  • Prevents color loss
  • Controls excess oil production
  • Diminishes shine
  • Retains moisture longer
