EVERYTHiNG YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEAT DAMAGE!

EVERYTHiNG YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEAT DAMAGE!

Everyone knows that heat damage happens with the repeated use of blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons. However, most don’t know that you can do some serious damage in one single pass of the flat iron or one single blow dry. THAT’S RiGHT!! Heat damage can happen fast and the only true way to 100% rid yourself of the havoc that was caused is a haircut. So let’s talk all the ways you can prevent heat damage from happening to you.

  1. GET REGULAR TRiMS! Hair that is porous already isn’t strong enough to handle any amount of heat you throw at it. So keeping up with regular trims will help keep your hair in its healthiest state. We recommend every 5-6 weeks even if it’s just a light dusting of those ends.
  2. USE HAiR CARE PRODUCTS THAT HEAL THE HAiR! One of our favorite lines and one we recommend to a majority of our guests is L’anza Healing Hair Care. They have some amazing rinse out and leave in reconstructors that infuse the hair with moisture and protein that is depleted during color services, from environmental stressors,  and from regular styling with heat tools.
  3. GET YOUR THERMAL PROTECTiON GAME ON! Always use a thermal protectant prior to applying any heat to the hair. L’anza stylers all have thermal protection up to 450 degrees. (but please, never have your heat tool up this high) They also have some amazing thermal protectants that actually decrease blow dry time! Who doesn’t want to save time on blow drying?!
  4. TURN THOSE HEAT TOOLS DOWN! Like we said earlier, DO NOT use your heat tools at 450 degrees. There is almost no need for that. It may seem faster but remember it is damaging your hair faster as well! Talk with your stylist about what temperature is right for your hair.
  5. INVEST iN QUALiTY HEAT TOOLS! We recommend using tools that have a temperature dial so you can control the amount of heat on your hair. Our favorite is Bio Ionic. The heat is distributed evenly throughout the tool allowing you to use a lower heat setting.

IS IT CHEATING IF IT’S THE SAME SALON?

Is it cheating if it’s in the same salon?

“If I see another stylist in the salon where my stylist works won’t she be mad at me?” or “I went to Sally while Jane was on maternity leave and I love how she did my hair. I want to continue seeing her but I don’t want to hurt Jane’s feelings.”

These are some things we have heard a lot over the years. The fear of cheating is a real thing and sometimes leads one to stop going to a salon all together to avoid any conflict. So we wanted to take a moment to talk about this issue and give you our thoughts on it.

Our team is here for you, our guests! If it wasn’t for you beautiful people we wouldn’t be living our dream on a daily. At MOD we want you to feel comfortable seeing any stylist you choose. Life is busy and we get that! Sometimes you just need in for a color before your friends wedding and as much as you want to see the stylist you have been seeing for 5 years your schedules just aren’t lining up. That’s okay! We invite you to book with any one of our fabulous stylists if that works best for you and your schedule. NO GRUDGES! NO HARD FEELiNGS! You won’t get the cold shoulder from the stylist you didn’t make an appointment with. In fact when that stylist has a moment she will most likely pop over to say hello and catch up.

Now what if you see another stylist while another one was gone and you really like the haircut and/or color they gave you. You want to continue to see this new stylist because she gave you a fresh new look and you simply want to change things up. We say go for it! Rebook with them. There is no need to explain or defend yourself. We all crave change! We promise none of our stylists will be upset if you are sitting in another teammates chair. You can even bounce back and forth between stylists within MOD. Like we mentioned before, life is busy and sometimes schedules just don’t line up. You may even choose to see one stylist for color and another for haircuts because you like what each of them do. That’s okay too. We all have different strengths.

Of course if you want to stay with one stylist you can. We just want you to know that all of these things are okay with us. We are a team here at MOD so seeing our fellow team mates slaying hair fills up our hearts and makes us happy inside. There is no “my guest” or “your guest” here. We as a team want to take care of OUR guests. We want to take care of YOU. TEAM MOD is here to do what is best for you and your hair.

See you at the salon!

7. What’s your favorite styling tip you like to teach your guests? My favorite styling tip is to encourage my guests to use a Wet Brush to detangle their hair after shampooing. I also like to teach my guests how to get a really pretty beach-y wave by using a wand to curl their hair.

WHAT IS DOGGY ‘POO?

WHAT IS DOGGY ‘POO?

What is Doggy ‘Poo you ask? It is a shampoo for your furry friends! However, this Doggy ‘Poo is so much more than a shampoo for your dog, it is a shampoo with a purpose.

I remember the first time hearing about the cause behind Doggy’Poo. I was sitting in a Unite Paramount Business class in Minneapolis, Minnesota. For those of you not familiar with the Unite brand, check out their website at Unitehair.com to meet the CEO and Founder, Andrew Dale. Andrew Dale is a very passionate man who believes in making salon owners and stylists life easier. He also is a lover of dogs! 🐶 ❤️

Besides making great hair care products, he is also a stylist and the owner of a salon in California. Did you know that a portion of all profits from the Unite Salon in San Diego go directly into supporting San Diego charities to help those without a voice? Pretty cool, huh?

So what is the purpose behind Doggy Poo you ask? To give back! ALL of the proceeds from the sale of Doggy ‘Poo are going to two organizations that are near and dear to Dale and his Unite Team’s hearts: The San Diego Humane Society and Shelter to Soldier. Isn’t that amazing!?!

Here at Mod, we certainly think so! So with all that being said, come check out Doggy’Poo here at the salon. It has oatmeal to soothe your furry friend’s skin and Argan Oil to promote a healthy and shiny coat. It is “Human tested, doggy approved.”

Stop by Mod’s beauty store and treat your pup to a spa day! 🐶

Training In Progress

‼️TRAINING IN PROGRESS‼️

Quiet!! Training: In Progress! Here at Mod Hair Color Salon & Beauty Store we believe education and training is vital to our success behind the chair. Not only is it what continues to make us a better stylist year after year, it is what can make or break a new stylist. That is why we are creating a training program here at the salon for stylists coming out of school. ?

The goal behind the training program is to allow for an easier transition from school to salon. Think of it as a residency for Cosmetologists. We are expecting the finished training program to be anywhere from 6-12 months.

I have been working with two very talented young stylists to create this training program for the past 4 months. Together we are discovering what works and what doesn’t all the while training them to become the best! The future of our stylists is very important to Jody and I.

I asked Mataya Clark what she liked best about the training program and she told me this, “In school you learn the basics of every cut, style, and color. This program allows you to learn more advanced techniques and fully prepare you for the unexpected. Being in a fast pace salon environment really opens your eyes to all the possibilities of becoming a successful stylist.”

She is right. You just can’t learn it all in school. Salon owners and senior stylists have an  obligation to guide their team. We need to take part in creating greatness in our industry. It is our responsibility to teach the next generation. In doing so we can truly learn a great deal.

Sara Fisher was the first to start in this program. She says she loves being a part of the development of the program. “I am happy to be apart of this development because I’ll really be able to see how much it changes and grows for stylists who are a part of it in the future. To be able to eventually coach others will be extremely rewarding.”

We look forward to seeing how far they have grown once they have completed the training program. They have already gained so much. Sara and Mataya are currently behind the chair on Saturdays doing blow outs, formal styling, waxing, makeup and hair treatments. They currently are in the cutting portion of the training program and have a goal of cutting hair behind the chair in October. This would allow them to be behind the chair Wednesday nights and Saturdays.

To schedule a blow out with Sara and Mataya call 319-553-1080 or book online at www.modsalonbeautystore.com.

Ten Questions With Mataya Clark

Ten Questions With Mataya Clark

1. When did you graduate from cosmetology college and from which one did you graduate? I graduated from Capri College in May of 2017.
2. Why did you go into this industry? Back in high school I had a HUGE collection of fashion magazines and always dreamed about someday making someone look as beautiful as the cover girl! As I got older I learned how much time, effort and patience it took to create something that perfect and it really sparked my love for the beauty community!
3. What is your favorite part of being a cosmetologist? My favorite part about being a cosmetologist is the ability to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and try something new. Whether it be a new eyeshadow technique or a completely different hair style. The simplest little detail can change someone’s entire look. Beauty can be found in so many different ways and showing someone how to recreate it at home is the icing on top of the cake.
 4. Why did you choose Mod? I chose Mod because of the friendly atmosphere and amazing talent the team brings to the Cedar Valley.  The owners Heather & Jody are very big on educating the stylist as well as the client.  Encouraging us to take outside classes, travel to beauty shows
and bringing in professional hair care line educators to the salon. They truly set you up for success in this ever growing industry. Learning from these ladies is such a blessing and a privilege.
5. What’s your favorite thing about being a team member at Mod? My favorite thing about being a team member at Mod is the amount of support & love each stylist gives one another. It’s not just about your personal success but the salons success as a whole.
6. What’s your most embarrassing salon moment? My most embarrassing salon moment would probably have to be within the first couple of weeks that I started at Mod. We were trying to get ahead on some spring cleaning and I was asked to get the cobwebs off of the drop ceiling with the end of a broom. Me being short… (I am only 5’2″) I accidentally knocked a picture off of the wall trying to reach the tippy top of the ceiling. This happened on a very busy day in the salon and as soon as the frame hit the floor making a giant SWOOSH sound everyone and their guests turned around and glared at me. I was completely mortified and turned red, thinking I broke this expensive piece of wall art. All of the stylists bursted out laughing saying “Uh oh new girls already breaking things!” ?  They soon let me know not to worry it’s just a silly picture! Phew!! ?
7. What’s your favorite styling tip you like to teach your guests? My favorite styling tip is showing my guests how to use an at home deep conditioning treatment! The #1 concern people have in the chair is how dry and dull their hair feels. Most of us lack moisture due to improper nutrition, over using hot tools or even effects of our environment. Taking home a weekly mask treatment can really change the quality of your hair. My favorite at home product is the MoroccanOil Weightless Hydrating Mask. It’s an argon oil based cream that helps restore shine and texture! Apply to wet hair and leave on for 5 minutes then rinse for amazingly manageable results! Using this product once a week will help your hair feel hydrated and healthy again! ??
8. What do you like to do most when you are not in in the salon? In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with friends & family. Spending time outside with my dog and going to the movies! I am also a huge lover of ALL kinds of music. Concerts are my favorite places to meet new people and exchange stories about life & love!
9. What is the hair care product you can not live without and why? I CANNOT live without a heat protectant. I have such a busy schedule and need something quick & easy for at home care. I love my blow dryer and my curling iron… (maybe a little too much). In order for me to protect the color and integrity of my hair I use the Kenra Platinum Blow Dry Spray. This is my favorite product because of its ability to minimize blow dry time up to 50%. It’s a light-weight oil based formula that helps detangle, control frizz and protect the hair against high heat. Not to mention it smells amazing ? Just a couple of spritz to your damp hair and you are ready to blow dry your way into a tropical paradise! ?
10. What are your top two services you enjoy doing most and why? I absolutely LOVE make-up applications. Make up has transformed my life in such a positive way. Growing up I was very shy and reserved; I somehow stumbled upon a makeup tutorial on YouTube and was immediately intrigued. There are so many different ways you can transform yourself, wether it be a dramatic lip color or a natural smokey eye! Recreating these on myself gave me the confidence to really shine and step out of my comfort zone. Cosmetology school has helped me gain the knowledge to educate my clients on how to create these same looks at home to make them feel beautiful too ??
Another great service I enjoy providing is eyebrow waxing! Recently eyebrows have become a HUGE beauty focus. From natural to bold, your eyebrows can really set your mood! Teaching my clients about different ways to style and maintain a brow look is critical. There are so many different products to help each clients specific needs!
